How We Test
What to Expect:
1. Before the Test:
- Make sure CARB's Annual Compliance Fee has been paid.
- Vehicle has been driven 15-20 minutes at highway speeds to avoid sensor errors
- Check for Warning Lights - Dashboard MIL is OFF or fail for "Monitor not Ready"
2. During the Test:
- CTC expert plugs a CARB-certified OBD device into the vehicle's diagnostic port.
- Scans for CARB requested data and older vehicles have a visual check also.
3. After the Test:
- CTC expert uploads pass or fail results directly into CARB's CTC-VIS into your account.
- A "FAIL" test result requires re-testing within 45 days after completed repairs.

How many emissions tests are required each year?
2025-2026
- Most heavy-duty non-gasoline vehicles must test twice per year.
- Motorhomes and agricultural vehicles only test once per year.
October 1, 2027
All OBD-equipped vehicles will be required to submit emissions data with quarterly testing
four times per year.
Which vehicles must comply with Clean Truck Check?
Most 2013 and newer diesel engines and 2018 and newer alternative fuel heavy duty vehicles with a GVWR over 14,000 lbs. are required to undergo periodic Clean Truck Check OBD testing under CARB regulations.
What about older diesel engines and what test type is required?
Diesel non-OBD vehicles (2012 and older diesel engines) are required to complete a smoke opacity test and a visual inspection of the vehicle’s emissions control equipment, referred to in this program as the Vehicle Emissions Control Equipment Inspection.
Alternative fuel non-OBD vehicles (2017 and older alternative fuel engines) are only required to complete the visual inspection and are not subject to the smoke opacity test requirement.
